Laser Hair Removal FAQs

We use ICE Tri-Band (Alexandrite, ND Yag, and Diode Laser) Sapphire tip, Skin Cooling Laser Hair Removal technology, which can reduce/eradicate your unwanted hair painlessly and permanently and is suitable for ALL skin tones however some hair colours will not be able to be treated - read on!

You will need a physical consultation and Patch Test prior to booking any Laser Hair Removal treatment. Even if you have had treatment elsewhere previously. You will need to come with visible hair in all of the areas you are considering laser to your initial consultation or we cannot assess the hair and therefore cannot treat you effectively

Magic! How does it work?

Hair grows from your follicles. We are all born with all of our hair follicles and throughout hormonal surges in our lifetimes, hair sprouts from these follicles, and hair growth changes during these hormonal growth periods (think adolescence, and menopause) This is usually when we notice changes to our growth - hair sometimes becomes coarse and more obvious in areas. When we laser you, we are generating heat from the Laser Wavelength which frazzles the growth cells close to your hair follicles, which prevents them from sprouting further hairs. Tivoli HotWax’s Lasers combine 3 laser wavelengths - 755nm (Alexandrite) which is suitable for fairer skin, 808nm (Diode) which is the standard wavelength suitable for most skin types, and 1064nm (ND.YAG) for darker skin tones. We can treat all skin tones with our lasers.

Some hair colours will not be able to be treated - read on!

Diode tech is the very latest and most effective Hair Removal technology AND it also provides incredibly effective sapphire tip ICE skin cooling during treatment for a comfortable, painless experience. As the Laser energy is conducted via the Melanin (which is the colour in your hair) coarse, darker hair types will achieve better results as more heat/energy can be transferred. There is no laser that can treat hair that is too fine or fair - or blonde, red or grey hair as it does not have enough melanin. Any laser clinic that tells you otherwise doesnt know what they are talking about - avoid!

Will it Hurt?

With our Lasers, they (almost!) work by magic. Your hairs are zapped in their follicles, you will feel cold, and may experience some ‘prickling’ in the skin. The new skin cooling technology Tivoli HotWax has invested in is NOTHING LIKE old, slow, painful laser hair removal treatments. Our aim is to minimise discomfort and provide a painLESS experience. We invest heavily in training, fantastic state-of-the-art equipment, ‘skin-friendly’ products, and body confidence is our thing! We wax and laser ourselves, we know how it feels. We can guarantee that if you invest in Laser treatments with us, you will leave saying it’s really not at all bad (and the results are SO worth it!)

I’m embarrassed. What if I’m too big, hairy, saggy, etc?

Nope, nope, and nope! SURPRISE! WE ALL HAVE HAIR! There is absolutely nothing to fear, we have sturdy, comfortable electric treatment couches. We position you in the best way to get to all of your hair, in minimal time with the least discomfort. There is no such thing as too hairy! We all have hair, some with more obvious growth than others, and waxing and laser can help reduce/eradicate hair growth. We pride ourselves on making clients feel as comfortable as possible. There is absolutely no body shaming at Tivoli HotWax. We treat ladies of all ages, shapes, sizes, and hairiness. Nothing we haven’t seen before. Please don’t be shy!

Will anything prevent me from being Lasered?

Yes. These are known as 'Contraindications'. You will be asked to fill in a 'consultation form' on the booking system, prior to consultation and you MUST advise us prior to your appointment if anything changes. If you are taking medication that thins the skin then you MUST check with your GP first and advise us of ANY current meds, or any taken in the last few months. If you have a fungal or viral infection (ie molluscum or warts) we are unable to treat you. We require all clients to be over the age of 18 for an 'intimate treatment' but are able to laser teens over 14 with parental consent. Our AMAZING Hair Removal Lasers are suitable for ALL skin tones HOWEVER If you have very fine, fair, red, or white/grey hair then Waxing or Electrolysis will be a better option for you due to the lack of melanin in these hair types. You should also avoid tanning during your laser treatments (we will give further advice at the consultation)

Do I need to do anything before my laser consultation/treatment?

LASER CONSULTATION - Please ‘grow your hair out’ for 2+ weeks prior to your consultation as we will need to see the hair to assess the type, colour, and growth pattern. If we cant see the hair then we cant assess and treat you effectively.

LASER TREATMENTS - requires the hairs to be VERY CLEANLY shaved before further treatment (usually 24 hours beforehand) You must use a clean, sharp razor, not a trimmer. The hairs need to be at the surface of the skin, no longer, and you can continue to shave as much (or as little) as you like for the duration of your treatments. Please ensure you have NO FAKE TAN in the areas to be treated. If you come with fake tan, or hairs too long, on the areas to be treated, we will be unable to treat you and you will be charged for the appointment time allocated to you. You should exfoliate your skin regularly with our fab SCRUBBLE to keep it clear of dead skin cells and help your hair grow through easily.

How many Laser Treatments will I need?

Ah the magic question. As we all grow hair differently, there is no magic number. However, you will likely need an initial minimum of 6-12 laser treatments, spaced at regular intervals (usually 8-14 weeks) and then potential top-ups over the months/years after your initial ‘group of sessions’ when you feel hairy! You can expect a ‘group of sessions’ to take a year to 18 months - Laser is not a quick fix for hair removal, it takes time, persistence and patience! You should however find every session will reduce hair cycles, aggressive growth and irritation. Best results - You can expect to see UP TO 95% Hair Reduction. It is highly unlikely every single hair will be gone forever, however you can certainly expect a great reduction if you are suitable for treatment, and follow our advice! Laser Hair Removal at THW will ultimately work out less expensive over your (hair removal) lifetime, than regular shaving OR waxing! Area dependant, we recommend laser treatments spaced at 8-14 week intervals - and that works out cheaper than a regular monthly wax! For us, its a no brainer, if your hair bothers you, who wouldnt want less of it?

I have PCOS / Hormonal Hair Growth - can I be treated?

We are achieving excellent results with many PCOS sufferers. But because unwanted hair growth in women is often hormonally driven, until hormonal imbalances are resolved, increased hair growth may continue in spite of hair removal treatments. For some women with PCOS, hair removal is an ongoing management technique. However, if the hair is suitable, regular Laser treatments will significantly reduce the amount of hair that is present and will slow down regrowth. PCOS sufferers plucking or shaving on a daily basis may find that they only require laser treatment every few weeks, with no plucking or shaving in between.

(Where women with PCOS differ from others is that their underlying hormone imbalance in PCOS causes new hairs to be created at a much faster rate than in women without PCOS, so treatment may be a recurrent course of regular laser sessions unless hormone levels are rebalanced through medical treatment)

How often will I need to be Lasered? 

Face - 4-8 week cycles, Torso 8-12 week cycles, and Limbs 10-16 week cycles (depending on the hair growth) and we will assess you at every treatment. You will need a course of treatments (MINIMUM of 6) to achieve best results, although we can expect to see a reduction in your hair growth, on the treated area, after the first treatment.

How long does the hair need to be?

Our Lasers require the hairs to be CLEANLY shaved before treatment (12-24 hours beforehand) this is very important for the effectiveness of the treatment. and you can continue to shave as much (or as little) as you like for the duration of your treatments. Please ‘grow it out’ for 2+ weeks prior to your consultation as we will need to see the hair to assess the type and growth pattern. If you do not shave properly, you will not achieve good results.

What are 'Ingrowing Hairs'

Hair becomes ingrown when the follicle gets blocked and the hair curls back into the skin. This can lead to sore, infected bumps, especially if you’re a picker! All physical hair removal - waxing/shaving/plucking can lead to ingrown hairs. And unfortunately, some of us suffer more than others. The best way to avoid is to 'exfoliate exfoliate exfoliate!' which keeps the follicles clear from dead skin, using our amazing SCRUBBLE, drinking lots of water, and moisturising daily. If you suffer from ingrown hairs, Laser will be a fabulous option as there will be reduced / eradicated regrowth!

Can I be Lasered on my period?

 Yes. No problem at all. Please wear a fresh tampon (string tucked in)/Moon Cup.

Can I be Lasered whilst pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. And also not during breastfeeding. Its not dangerous but your Hormones are disrupted and this can affect hair growth cycles. If you’re planning a family, or have a new baby, Laser should wait. If you find out you are pregnant during your course of treatment, you should stop lasering. You can restart once you have finished breastfeeding.

I’m going on Holiday, when should I be Lasered?

For Laser - the fairer your skin is, the more aggressively you can be treated with the Alexandrite Laser. Our NDYAG lasers CAN treat tanned and darker skin tones however we would always advise staying out of the sun for 2 weeks prior to treatments. We will not treat you if you have actively tanned 2 weeks before your appointment. Having Laser is a commitment to your skin. You risk serious burns if you dont follow our advice. We will talk more in your consultation.

An online consultation form will be assessed prior to your physical consultation and a patch test, to assess your suitability, and further physical consultation and a test patch will be required prior to carrying out any Laser Hair Removal Treatment. We try to be as transparent as possible when quoting pricing for laser hair removal, but please understand some people’s needs are different from others. You will require a course of Laser Hair removal treatments (usually 6-12 + spaced at regular intervals for optimum results) and then top-up treatments may be required. Best results are usually up to 95% reduction in hair growth. Please note, if you have had laser treatments elsewhere and just want a top-up, you will still need a consultation/patch test prior to Laser Treatment with us, where we can discuss pricing.

Laser Hair Removal/Reduction is effective wherever you grow hair and theoretically, damage/destruction to the hair follicle will reduce/remove unwanted hair permanently, but, because of the nature of hair and the many factors that influence the growth of hair, the results vary from client to client. The effect of repeated treatments is cumulative. Some hair growth types will not be affected by Laser Hair Removal. Hormone fluctuations can affect future hair growth. For some people, laser hair removal will not be effective.

What should I wear?

Please come in clean, loose clothes - If you are having an intimate treatment, you will be asked to remove ALL of your clothing from the waist down. If you are being intimately Lasered then we will treat you without your knickers on. You may feel more comfortable wearing a long t-shirt for your treatment. We recommend clean cotton knickers and loose clothing for you to put on post-treatment.

Can I bring a friend?

This is a non-spectator sport! We do not allow pets, children, friends, or partners (or your mum - unless you’re under 18!) in the room whilst you are being treated. There is dangerous equipment. Completely unsuitable for kids or pets. There is a small waiting area for clients only. There are some lovely cafes in Montpellier / The Courtyard right outside where a friend/partner could wait.

We do not allow photos/filming of your treatment (unless agreed prior) however we have an Instagram spot and love being tagged in your pre/post treatment piccies! Make sure you follow us on social media for appointment availability and late cancellations

Can I Wax and Laser at the same time?

Not in the same area, no. However we do offer bespoke Wax and Laser combos where you might not want to be hairless forever, everywhere! An example - you want your bikini line lasered but have an intimate wax done too - thats fine, just book a consult and we can get that organised
